While the 2017 vintage began with a very dry winter, temperatures were very mixed, with a very cool January and a rather mild February. Thus, bud break began around March 20th for the earliest Merlots. By mid-April phenological stages were on average ten days ahead of 2016, similar to the vintage of 2014.

Cabernet Sauvignon 60%, Merlot 40%
This is an interesting counterpoint to the grand vin, most notably for its lower alcohol in the context of the vintage – a gentle 13%. There are pleasant notes of cedarwood and a smoky aspect to the bouquet. The lower alcohol provides a lighter touch on the palate which works well; complexity is not the goal here.

The 2014 Lynch-Bages is just as powerful and dense from bottle as it was from barrel. Deep, powerful and bold, it possesses remarkable richness in all of its dimensions. Ripe red cherry, spice, leather, tobacco and rose petal all develop in the glass, but it is the wine’s sheer amplitude today that is quite remarkable.
